This past fall, junior Austin Flowers suffered a severe concussion, making it his third football-related concussion since his eighth-grade year.

This one occurred when he was tackled, and his head hit the ground.

“As soon as my head hit the ground, it was just throbbing,” said Flowers, whose other two concussions came last year and during his eighth-grade season. “After the game, I got really dizzy and saw colors. I even vomited.”

Flowers’ concussion led to a bruise on his brain, he said.

“It was really hard to focus and concentrate on my school work after my concussion,” Flowers said. “Even though it didn’t last very long, it still made me struggle. But now I am good to play and I was able to finish out the rest of the season.”

Although Flowers has been playing football for five years, concussions still haven’t left a pounding impact on him as a player.

“I wasn’t really worried to be back playing after my last three concussions even though they hurt really bad. I still just wasn’t that worried about it,” Flowers said. “Even though I’ve had three concussions, they aren’t really a huge deal to me.”
