Sandi Hirvo has come through life with a lot of athletic background that has helped pave her way to where she is today, which is the new athletic secretary.

“I am excited to be the new secretary,” said Hirvo, who played volleyball, track and field hockey and owned a jazzercise studio. “I really enjoy athletics; I’ve been involved in athletics for most of my life. This job just looked like the perfect fit for me because organization and athletics really resonate with me. The organization that it takes is very challenging, and I am super excited for this next step.”

Hirvo, who previously worked in the high school as a locker room supervisor, replaces Shelly Marine, who retired to spend more time with her mother – who suffered a stroke in June.

As the secretary of the athletic department, Hirvo will work closely with the athletic director Ryan Portenga. Their roles coincide with each other, so Hirvo said she will be able to learn a lot from him her first year and grow as the year goes on.

“Hirvo has been a longtime employee of the high school in various roles,” Portenga said. “She’s ready for a larger role. She loves sports, loves kids and is a dynamic professional.”

As it will be her first year as the secretary of the athletic department, Hirvo said she will have to take on new responsibilities and learn the process of how everything works.

“The most difficult thing for me to learn I think will be learning all of the processes that go on,” Hirvo said. “I will have to learn all of the people’s names to whom I need to interact with, such as athletic directors and secretaries from different schools. It is a huge network of people, so I will need to learn how to organize all of it. I think the easiest thing this year for me will be the building and my surroundings.”

Even though Hirvo will have a lot of new changes and responsibilities, she said she is thrilled with her new job.

“I am excited to see what this year brings,” Hirvo said. “I am ready for the new challenge and excited for the new opportunities in the athletic department. I am ready to be more involved and in tune with the athletics at Mona Shores.”
