Sophomore Tommy Cotner became the best diver in Shores history as he was named All-State honorable mention and had a 14th-place finish at the state meet in the 1-meter dive.
“Tommy has an amazing work ethic,” coach Mick Homan said. “He gets his strong work ethic from his mom, dad and sister. The training they do to be good in their sports has rubbed off. You can see where he gets his hunger for competition.”
With this work ethic, Cotner, who owns the school record for the six-dive and the 11-dive event, was able to improve on his dives and earn a higher score from the judges, especially with the improvement he showed over the season.
“Many factors play into his level of success from being a very talented athlete, a crazy dare devil, perfectionist, to many talented coaches helping him out along the way,” Homan said. “When he comes out of the water after a dive, he can automatically tell you what he did right and wrong. He has great understanding of his body as he is diving. I would say that he has great attitude toward diving and willing to challenge him every practice and every dive.”
Cotner can be described as a great athlete with dedication and God-given talent.
“What makes Tommy Cotner a good diver involves many factors. It starts with a great support staff of coaches, teammates, family and friends supporting, encouraging and pushing him to set and accomplish his goals,” Homan said. “Another factor is that he is a very dedicated and hardworking young man with a lot of God-given talent.”
