“Standardized testing is at cross purposes with many of the most important purposes of public education. It doesn’t measure big-picture learning, critical thinking, perseverance, problem solving, creativity or curiosity, yet those are the qualities great teaching brings out in a student,” said Randi Weingarten the president of the American Federation of teachers.

Today, standardized testing can be the difference in college acceptance or the difference in the scholarships that students receive. The pressure of these tests puts a heavy weight on students and causes stress and anxiety for many of the kids taking the tests.

Junior Peyton Erndteman said that standardized tests definitely cause her stress.

“Standardized testing is stressful because it feels like the one test that defines your entire academic future,” she said. “People look at these tests as a primary factor in defining your intelligence.”

This shows that students feels the pressure while testing, and it can affect their performance. These test scores can influence a student’s college admissions just as much as their grade point average and level of classes. They are making the value of one test equal to four years of a high school education, and many students who do well in the classroom do not test well.

Sophomore Madeline Eckerman said she feels these tests are valuable but not the most important thing.

“It is an important factor but others things like GPA and AP scores should have more weight for college admissions,” Eckerman said. “The one test should not be the deciding factor on someone’s admissions.”

Standardized testing is an unbalanced way of accounting for students’ academic abilities. Because of this, many students find the stress of taking a standardized test to be overwhelming.
